This is the overt theme of A Room with a View. Thanks for this great analysis.

This has great insights in it. I've been studying THE HANGOVER and why it works so well. I've realized Stu is the protagonist, and his big lie at the outset is that he believes he's in a relationship worthy of marriage. He's not, and it takes him the whole movie to slowly wake up to that truth. The adventure in Vegas - finding his buddy, Doug - compels him to become a different man by the end of the movie, one who won't settle for an abusive relationship. Apparently, he was that guy during their night of debauchery. The movie is about him getting to that place when he's sober.

Tony -- wanted to tell you how great this post was. It definitely found me at a time I needed it. This is helping me articulate (better) to folks I'm working with what I'm trying to accomplish with my lead character. I've been getting a lot of pushback on the lead needing to be so stupid, likable and sympathetic from the jump -- that gives me nowhere to go with the character. I can't believe that characters that follow this journey are no longer relevant in modern storytelling. It's basically the entire premise of Tony Stark if you have to apply it to the comic book world. They're actually my favorite kinds of characters because they offer you the hope that it's never too late to change a little not to mention that they are fun to play with because they often say what people are thinking inside but are afraid to admit. Great stuff man.

This is amazing and gives me a new appreciation for movies I've written off as "old guy needs young ass to remind him what life is." The young ass is only the hackneyed and shallow Hollywood medium for regeneration. It's understanding the dynamics of the lie that's really useful.
