Cameron talks about getting inserts on his own, just him and a camera, for Terminator in his master class. Very much a budget filmmaker mentality. If you think you need them, get them.
I'm not the editor. The editor assembled scenes and put together his cut of the film as I was in production. A week after wrapping filming, I came in to see his assembly, and since then I've been working with him second-by-second to fine tune the film to my director's cut, and now we're working second-by-second together to fine tune the studio cut. So although I'm not the editor, I've been deeply deeply involved with every editorial decision once the editor's assembly was completed and unless I'm replaced by the studio, I will continue to be deeply enmeshed in each stage of the post-production process (scoring, visual effects, color timing, mixing, etc).
I was wondering the same thing as I didn't see an editor on IMDB. I worked on Heat and I remember one of the editors Pat, asking Mann if he was a chair guy, a couch guy or a pacer. Mann responded "I'm going to be right at your fucking elbow." Still makes me laugh.
Dude this was sensational. Many many thanks for the time and effort that went into sharing that. A true king.
Really fascinating and thoughtful insights! Thanks for sharing, and hope all goes well with editing and release!
Thanks for sharing Tony. Useful and nuanced insights as always.

Not sure if you respond to comments on here, but I’m really curious why you chose to be the editor on your directorial debut.

Excellent. That’s the way to do it. Thanks for the quick reply!
